Garbage

There has been a lot going on from chapters 17-20 on The Giver. To begin with, Jonas and the community had a holiday and everyone was exited because it was so unusual to get one. While the members from the community were enjoying their vacation playing games, Jonas was having a hard time because when he saw the kids playing he realized that the game was actually an imitation of war and he remembered a memory (from the world before) of a kid dying and suffering. Because of this Asher and Jonas got in a fight.
Jonas' family was having dinner, dad said that he would have to release a twin baby because a birthmother had identical twins. He said that he would choose them by weight and then he would get the other baby comfortable and someone from elsewhere would take him away.
The next day Jonas asked The Giver about release and about the previous receiver of memories that failed. The Giver calmly talked to him about what happened. Her name was Rosemary and the Giver didn't want to give her pain memories but she insisted and after giving her a terrible memory she changed. Not long after that Rosemary asked for release. When Jonas heard the story, the Giver decided he should see the release of the twin baby his dad needed to make. Stunned, confused and panicked; that is how Jonas felt after seeing that his dad injected a needle on the baby's forehead and then died. Every release meant death, Fiona did so too. That means that first of all, Jonas' father lied and so did Fiona and secondly, Rosemary, Larissa, and everyone else who got released didn't go elsewhere; they died.  As you may assume, Jonas was extremely paranoid and freaked out so the Giver allowed him to stay that night on his dwelling. The Giver was very smart and he told Jonas that after eating they would make a plan to change the society forever. And so they did, the plan was perfect, on the ceremony day Jonas would escape at the right time so nobody noticed and drive off with the Giver to a far away village. Then Jonas would use his bicycle to find ELSEWHERE and leave his memories behind to the community so they realize that the world must change.
Finally, in the end of the chapter the Giver tells Jonas that his daughter's name was Rosemary.

"He picked up the carton and carried it to the other side of the room. He opened a small door on the wall; Jonas could see darkness behind the door. It seemed to be the same sort of chute into which trash was deposited at school."
(Lowry 150)

Jonas father had dumped the baby on the chute. I feel this is completely insane because it is like a message that says that 'if you are no use to the community or are different then you are the same as garbage to us'. Over the chapters that I have read, it has been very clear that they want everyone to be the same and if there are twins it is too crazy to think that there are 2 community members that you can't tell apart.

Jonas' community is careful because there is no room for mistake; making a mistake could get you released or ruin your life in the community. To me, it is no excuse for the people not to know what has happened because taking a human life away because someone says so is like when people ask that <if someone told you to jump off a building would you do it?>. I think that life is a concept that isn't taken seriously on the society and consequently people are forced to live under oppressive rules and concepts.

Overall, Jonas society should change because we see knew concepts that are psychotic. i think that the Giver will want to go with Jonas to 'elsewhere' and after looking for this mysterious place what they find will be much worse than the community's rules and lifestyle. then the Giver and Jonas will work hard to go back to the community feeling regret. This book keeps the reader very amused and interested. The ending of the book is hard to find because anything can happen at this point.

I think that the society will look like this...

  2. Dani, the great thing about a true democracy is that government should follow majority rule at the same time respecting minority opinions. The difficult thing can be respecting minority opinions, especially when it is unpopular. I dont think this community is very democratic at all.
